Violet Sky
From Flagon With The Dragon
Violet Sky is a homebrew campaign setting I came up with for an episodic Mutants and Masterminds 2nd Edition game.

Background Information
Prior to the Violet Sky event on December 21st 2012 the world was very similar to our own though secret government labs had realized fantastic technologies (like an invisibility field or nano-technology) we only read about in whimsical news stories today. Covert wars were being fought with these new inventions and whispers of secret organizations fighting crime and terrorism were common though nothing was confirmed. Whatever the world was the Violet Sky event changed it all.
No one can remember what happened during the 30 seconds of the event other than a timeless feeling and intense white and violet light. The world woke to discover a small number of people with fantastic powers thought of only in comics and movies. Most used their powers to gain whatever they could, often taking it from whoever they could or acting without concern for a world often powerless to stop them. A smaller number still decided to use their gifts for something better, they became heroes.
In a post Violet Sky world, governments and officials are overwhelmed by the appearance of "supers" whose abilities nobody could prepared for and people are were terrified when officials seem powerless to stop these individuals. This caused them to give almost free reign to those people with extraordinary abilities willing to step in and stop others trying to pull society apart. Laws about personal safety have been expanded to remove the liability from anyone retaliating against a super-powered individual they feel threatened by, this has allowed for costumed heroes to carry out their work but many feel the complexities of a vague definition of what constitutes a threat is a recipe for personal disaster.
As many news casters are fond of saying it's a new era, a "wild west" of demigods duking it out on the streets with the average citizen caught in the middle.
Character Creation
The campaign is shooting for a grittier "street level" feel so starting heroes are capped at Power Level 6 to start.
20 points are the norm between power levels.
Under the Hood
This campaign setting is a big change from my previous in that it's not about politics or the state of the world, Violet Sky is all about personal responsibility and consequences. The inspiration for me is the Internet or online gaming and how people act once they have they are not observed and can get away with it or how they act when given the power to do something with few consequences.
Obviously the show Heroes gave a lot of inspiration for the setting but also early comic efforts like DP7 and such are a big part of it as well. Superpowers and fantastic abilities are definitely part of the world but I'm striving for a grittier feel, realistic might be a bad term for a superhero game but I'm definitely trying to keep some measure of realism in the setting and not go so far with things as to make it a fairy tale.
